University Student Financial Aid for the Dominican Republic

Project Canefire is introducing a new program
for high school graduates entering university in the DR!

Community leaders and a Dominican Republic Education (DRE) team presented Project Canefire with the challenge of assistance to secondary students going on to Universities

n 2018, after on-the-field consultation, PC interviewed 15 students who were selected individually and locally. All are from families and students with limited resources. They presented us with personal testimonies, school records, and recommendations from pastors and schools. Our conclusion was that they were good candidates for university training and financial aid. 9 were chosen to start Semester 1, 2018, and 4 others will start in January if funds are provided.

In 2020, 10 new students were interviewed by Gladys/Ray Brinks and Maria Cunningham. A celebratory party was held at a local Monte Plata pizza joint, at which current or graduated students told their stories and thanked their sponsors. In addition, a few of the possible new students were introduced. It truly was a marvelous evening enjoyed by the 2020 work team and the thankful students.

Student Donors

So, we need a few more student-support sponsors.

We are seeking supporters who can fully or partially fund costs for a particular student for one year or more. Ideally that would be reviewed annually. We will pair you up with a specific student so that you and they can write, text, call, or even visit. You can follow their progress and encourage them!

Educational Costs

Schooling costs in the DR are primarily supported by the government, but private universities do charge a limited cost of $60 per month. Supply and transportation costs are roughly another $60 per month. Students requested aid for tuition costs, and almost all felt they could cover other fees through personal resources. Our estimate is that $12,000 to $15,000 would cover everything for a 2 to 4 year university degree. That's approximately $1,000 annually per student.
